LAN and WAN the same?

Difference between LAN and WAN Networks-There are several types of computer networks, but the most popular are the internet, LAN, and WAN. Most common people may already know the internet, but what about LAN and WAN networks? Even though it is included in the category of computer networks, there are differences between LAN and WAN that must be known, because ordinary people have a wrong understanding of both.

LAN network

Local Area Network or LAN is a computer network with a small area coverage. Computers in offices, schools, buildings, and campuses rely on LANs to connect to a central server.

LAN technology is developing rapidly, currently carrying IEEE 802.3 Ethernet technology with switch device support. Data transfer speeds also vary, from 10, 100 to 1000 Mbit/s.

The difference between LAN and WAN lies in three main characteristics, namely:

1. Higher LAN data transfer capability.
2. The coverage area of the LAN area is narrower and smaller.
3. LAN networks do not need telecommunication lines that can be directly leased from certain telecommunication operators.

Each computer connected to a LAN network has its own computing power. Each computer has defined access rights to reach resources or servers.

The resource in question is a device, for example, a printer or scanner. LAN network computer users can communicate with each other using certain customized applications.

WAN network

Wide Area Network or WAN is a computer network with a wider area coverage. So, computers are connected to each other in a wide and complex scope, whether it's between regions, cities, provinces to countries.

WAN technology is considered a unification of various LAN networks so that they are connected to each other in one server that utilizes telecommunications networks belonging to telecommunications operators.

The difference between LAN and WAN lies in three main characteristics, namely:

1. The speed of WAN data transfer depends on the services offered by telecom operators.
2. The coverage area of the WAN area is wider and more complex because it unites several LAN networks into one server.
3. Building a WAN network requires a telecommunications network provided by certain telecommunications operators. WAN networks are highly relied on by large companies, state banking departments, and state-owned enterprises. Network development is more complex and difficult, so it needs to be handled directly by experienced experts.

Conclusion Differences between LAN and WAN Networks

In simple terms, the difference between LAN and WAN lies in the coverage area of access. The LAN access area is narrower, while the WAN access area is wider because it relies on certain telecommunications operator services.
